New Station 18
UPDATE - July 17, 2025
- Construction is progressing in several phases. Currently, the County Planning Department is reviewing two critical sets of documents: the metal building specifications and the overall building plans. These two sets must be fully integrated, which is contributing to a slight delay - a common challenge with metal building construction.
- The metal structure is being fabricated off-site and is on schedule for delivery. Once it arrives, assembly should proceed quickly (depending on concrete curing time).
- All necessary permits have been secured on schedule, and the project continues to move forward. To expedite the construction timeline, we began the demolition and public utilities phase early. While the lot may appear empty, significant progress has been made behind the scenes. The retaining wall has been installed and has cured, septic is installed, and the dirt pad has been certified for compaction.
- We’d like to thank our neighboring properties for their support throughout the process. For safety reasons, especially to ensure emergency vehicle access, vegetation was cleared on both sides of the site, which required additional permitting and inspections.
- As with many public works projects, this one is subject to strict state and federal guidelines, which can often cause delays. Maintaining full operations of the fire station on such a limited site has presented additional challenges. The temporary station, though essential for continuous service, occupies space that could have allowed us to streamline certain phases of demolition.
- The community has experienced no break or delay in service, and emergency response times remain unaffected.
- We have held several public meetings and regularly attend community events to share project updates. While new construction in San Diego is a time-consuming process, the District's dedicated team is working hard to meet the community’s high expectations.
- The constructed station will be approximately 8,000 square feet, 2 stories, and have 6 rooms. The apparatus bay will be two doors wide, double deep. The new station is double the size and capacity of the previous station.
- The Jack Dyer memorial has been safely stored for future use at the new site. The front of the station has been reserved but the exact details have not yet been established. We are looking for a funding source and a design suitable for Crest residents to come pay respects to this Firefighter who gave his life for the community. We are looking for donations and ideas for this portion of the project.
PAST UPDATES
The San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection has begun rebuilding Fire Station 18 to better serve the Crest Community. We are excited to share construction updates with you, and anticipate construction beginning April 1, 2024.

During construction, fire station personnel and equipment will be relocated to a modular building located at the west end/rear of the current property. Response times and services will not be affected during the construction process.
This new construction highlights that the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District is committed to investing into each of our stations so we can meet the emergency response needs of all our citizens served!
Continued progress and highlights will be posted here.
